Timeline Contest Creator

Timeline Contest Creator went live last night! This app will help you run contests directly from your business page’s Timeline, which is now allowed by Facebook. To check it out just visit http://timelinecontestcreator.com. This first version is currently invite only, but you can request an invite by joining our list here: http://signup.timelinecontestcreator.com. Timeline Contest Creator is 100% FREE to use, and, besides just sample contest templates, you can also use it to select random winners. In this post we’ll show you how it works!

Timeline Contest Creator Home

On our homepage, you can see we’ve broken down the app into 2 Steps:

  1. Step 1: Create a Contest – Craft your Facebook Timeline Contest post. Browse our templates to get some ideas and free images which you can use.
  2. Step 2: Pick a Winner – When you’re ready to pick a winner, the app will let you select the contest post and automatically generate a random winner based on likes/comments.

Timeline Contest Templates

You can edit the sample post right in the textbox or copy/paste to your computer. At the bottom of the page we offer some tips to help you create a great contest post and get maximum visibility. One tip is to be sure to either highlight the contest post, or Pin to Top of your Timeline. This way you can make sure your visitors see it and it doesn’t just get lost in your other page posts. Another tip is to use the free Facebook’s Notes app to host your contest rules and disclaimers. Because having all that info in the actual post is not pretty 🙁

Use the sample posts to get some contest ideas. And for the Like and Comment contest types, you’ll have a variety of pre-made graphics to choose from. Click the arrows in the slides to find the one you like best. Right-click and select Save image as…  to download and use these images in your contests. We made them just for you 🙂 When you’re ready, post the contest to your Timeline and off you go!

Timeline Contest Random Winner Selection

First select the Facebook Page, and then the post for which you want to select a winner. You can browse for older posts by clicking the Load Next link on the top right.

Select Timeline Contest Post

Select Timeline Contest Post

Once you click on a post, the app will process the likes and comments to determine the winners. The winners are chosen at random and you will be presented with 3 options. The first option is the winner based on Likes alone. The second option is based on Comments, with each person receiving only one entry regardless of how many times they commented. The third option is also based on Comments, but each comment by the person counts as an entry, so the more they comment the better their chance of winning!

Now click on the person under the contest type that applies to you and you have your official winner! In the green winner box, clicking on that person will take you straight to their Facebook profile page so you can message them.

Facebook Contest Rules Changed on 08/27/2013

Facebook recently announced that they would allow promotions to be run directly on a business Page's timeline. The impact of the new Facebook contest rules is going to be huge! Here’s an example of a Facebook contest from their newly updated Promotion Guidelines:

Facebook Contest Example

Facebook Contest Example

What do the new Facebook Contest rules mean for your business?

Now it'll be easier, quicker, and cheaper than ever to run your own contest on Facebook and, in turn, boost your page’s engagement significantly! These promos will work on mobile, are easy to launch, and free! The one downside to all this? Picking a winner from all the likes or comments can be tedious work.

Timeline Contest Creator

To help businesses take advantage of the new Facebook promotion rules, we’re creating the Timeline Contest Creator! The timeline contest app will be ready in the next few days. We'll be letting a few users in at a time so that we can ensure everything is working well.

The app is being designed to be super easy to use. Step 1 helps you get your Facebook Timeline Contest created. You'll have a number of pre-made templates to choose from. Change them to suit your needs and publish to your Timeline. When you’re ready to pick the winner, come back to the app and proceed with Step 2. You’ll choose your page and the post that is being used for the contest. Timeline Contest Creator will take care of checking all the likes and comments and show you a random winner based on the contest type.

Our first version will support Facebook Like contests and Facebook Comment contests. For comments you can choose whether each comment is treated as a separate entry (which increases the persons chance of winning). Or you can limit to just one entry per person, regardless of the number of comments.

Get an Early Invite!

We have a page setup for you to get on the invite list. Just go here: Timeline Contest Creator Early Access to get on the list. Want to be one of the first ones in? Help us out by sharing with your friends (sharing options shown after signup). In return, you get moved up the list for each referral you send us!

Grow Your Email List With Digital Delivery

Regardless of what your business sells, growing your email list should be a top priority. If you could do just one thing to grow your email list, offering an incentive or “bribe” is a very effective method. Before someone joins your mailing list, they need to know how it benefits them (WIIFM). Offering a freebie like an eBook, PDF, video, or other downloadable file is a great way to get them to take that initial step. In this post I’m going to show you how to use Wufoo to grow your email list and send out digital delivery emails, all available under their free plan!

Wufoo Mailing List Form

Go to http://wufoo.com and create an account or log in to your existing account. Then you’ll want to go to the Template Gallery and select the Mailing List template. This link will take you right where you need to go: https://www.wufoo.com/gallery/templates/forms/mailing-list. Then just click Use This Form.

Create a Simple Opt-In Form

You’ll then be taken to the form edit screen. Here we are just going to make one small change and add a Name field and drag it above the Email field. Best practice is to leave the Name field optional. You could also edit the label on the Email field if you don’t like the “Your Email Address” text.

Set Up Digital Delivery

Now that the fields are ready, we’ll setup the confirmation email. Click over to the Form Settings tab. You’ll need to enable/check the Send Confirmation Email to User box. Then select the field which contains the user’s email, in this case it is “Your Email Address“. And then include a reply to email address so that you can be notified if a user replies to the confirmation email.

Next, click the Customize Confirmation Email button. This will open a window where you can enter the message that will be sent to the visitor. Here’s where you include the link to your download file. Enter in your message with the link and specify your Name or Company and click Done.

Get Visitors to Your Mobile Facebook Page Tabs

At the time of this writing, Facebook has yet to add page tabs/apps to the mobile version of Facebook Business Pages. What’s even worse is they recently revealed that 78% of US users are mobile! The good news is that most of the major page tab apps, including Landable, support mobile Facebook page tabs. The bad news is you have to get users to go to the shareable smart URL to enable the mobile versions. In this post I’m going to show you a simple trick to allow your visitors to access the mobile tab directly from your Facebook Page!

Get Your Shareable Page Tab URL

First thing you will need to do is find the shareable URL from your Page Tab tool. To learn how to do that in Landable, check out this post. Copy the share URL to your clipboard once you’ve found it. Now go to your Facebook page and click the Edit Page dropdown and click on Edit Settings.

Edit Facebook Page Settings

Add the Mobile Facebook Page Tab Link

In the Page Info section, find the Long Description and click Edit. The Long Description is the text that gets displayed on the mobile version of your Facebook Page. So what we’re going to do is just put a link to our mobile friendly page tab here! On our page we use “View on Mobile:” and pasted the shareable link right after.

Now when mobile visitors come to your page, they can click the link in the description to load the mobile Facebook Page tab! To see it in action, just visit our page on your mobile phone. Here’s a preview:

Implement a Facebook Like Gate & Collect Emails on Your Facebook Page

In this post we’re going to show you how you can quickly setup a Facebook like gate and how to collect email subscribers on your Facebook page…

One of the best (and essentially free) ways to grow your fan base is by using an exclusive offer for new fans. Placing that special content behind a like-gate/fan-gate gives visitors an incentive for becoming a fan. What kind of content can you use?

  • Coupon codes for discounts or free shipping
  • Sneak Peek or Early Access to content such as ebooks, webinars, podcasts, etc…
  • Exclusive, fan-only access to register for events, conferences, etc…
  • Giveaways – Stickers, T-Shirts, and other types of “swag”

Like-Gating Coupon Codes

For coupon codes, it’s very simple to setup. Everything you need to setup a fan-gated tab can be done using the Landable Page Builder. The Non-Fan version will contain a brief message telling the visitor what they will be getting once they become a fan (i.e. 10% Off, Free Shipping, $5 Off). As shown below:

Non-Fan Screenshot

Non-Fan Sample Content

Once you create the Non-Fan version, just Save your changes and switch over to the Fan-Only view. There you can add your coupon code and any rules the visitor must follow to claim the promo. Here’s an example:

Collect Email Subscribers

You can take this a step further and grow your email list at the same time. Use an ebook, giveaway, or some other type of freebie/incentive to help collect emails on your Facebook Page.

Collect Email Subscribers on your Facebook Page

To accomplish this, we’re going to use Wufoo (http://wufoo.com). They have an awesome feature where once the form is submitted, they will send a notification to the email used in the signup. There you can add the link to your download! Something like: “Thanks for signing up! Here is the link to your download:”

Once you’ve created your form and setup the email notification, copy the embed code generated by Wufoo:
